Brilliant...I didn't realize how much marketing dna we share Eben!
For fun go back up the "tree" to Werner and go deep into his teachers...you'll find William Penn Patrick who started Holiday Magic and Leadership Dynamics. From that "grad class" you'll find Zig, Dexter Yaeger and Glenn Turner along with Werner.
It gets murky if you go deeper up from William Penn Patrick and his contemporaries like L. Ron Hubbard (!)...some say they learned from research done by Aleister Crowley.
Anyhow, it's an amazing body of work, about the same age as the airplane...nice job Eben!

Why??

Poor people brag to each other about the size of their TV's...
Rich people brag to each other about the size of their libraries...
Seriously, Eben I trust your information, all other factors aside, because of the sheer volume of books you quote.
Posted by: Ryan | March 11, 2008 01:27 PM
Nice to see a big reference library.
Re Napoleon Hill - he didn't make any real money 'til his book was published.
In other words he didn't have the knowledge himself, it was 2nd/3rd hand reportage, but by reporting it he became wealthy.
Posted by: Clive | March 11, 2008 01:30 PM
Eben, as usual, helpful information that utilizes the concepts you're teaching.
A daunting library to be sure. How soon might you make your personal bibliography available?
Posted by: Simon | March 11, 2008 01:32 PM

Thanks for all you do.

Hey Eben,
speaking of frameworks, i've been actually using you as a framework for the last few years.
thanks
ps. did a speedreading course help you get through all of those books like it is helping me?
Posted by: Matt | March 11, 2008 01:47 PM
Self Help ? Buying books is a good beginning, as you showed us. Freud is also responsible for the "Fetish" (dark parts)
Carnegie lessons are of course used all over the place on the Net and feedback to create a product..
Napoleon Hill is also one of best writer to become successfull, but even if his theory wasn't prooved scientifically, it works empirically.
Understanding the way we function is very important on individual level, but doesn't seem to work on group level.
e.g. Why do we have so much problems to solve the CO2 problem as a group that has some very simple solutions (like using cars running on methanol another gas that is warming the athmosphere and available in great quantities in all sort of garbages )?
I have some ideas about this, but I guess thisq is not the place to discuss it. Thanks for the content, makes us all think !

Great stuff as always. Love the stuff! You don't happen to have any Irvine Welsh in all that, do you?
Posted by: Jonny | March 11, 2008 01:49 PM
Hi Eban,
Thanks for all the great info so far. Awesome overview here.
In this one I notice something, though that is kinda rooted in our Western way of thinking with huge emphasis on linear thought processes. This causes fragmentation.
I think I notice some in this video also.
For example you talk about frameworks (plural), implying that there are/ should be different frameworks.
Now how much more powerful would things get when they would come together as parts of one framework?
In such a way synergy is fueled.
It is similar to Bruce Lee training himself WHILE he was on his way to a friend for training. Aka integrated all actions into one overlapping framework. Compared to a guy stepping in to his car, driving to the gym, train hard and than watch football on TV back home (maybe with a beer and a hamburger). Aka fragmented frames, not integrated or "whole".
Looking forward to your next one, your doing great work here.

Hi Eben,
Another very interesting bite sized piece.
I've been implementing your suggestions and lessons a piece at a time and expanding them into my project.
Well, let me tell you what had happened the last 2 lessons.
I had been developing my project-I'm ambitious and which is the only way anything works well for me-but I ran into a road block with my first e-book/report.
I can write the main parts, but then I hit the wall. But your webinar cured that.
The simple step by step method you had taught in your previous webinar showed me a much simpler route to creating my e-book/report.
At the same time, I connected with my clients and other interested parties to give feedback. And as you suggested, I should use them for content and use them with my own developed content. (Every live participant gave a response and about 30% of online people responded - total 608 respondents.) The tag cloud was especially useful and rather fun to use as I'm no techie.
This e-book/report is actually my free pdf content to get opt-ins and to educate my readers.
Well Eben, it was like the brakes on my project was suddenly lifted and I made some remarkable progress.
I'm building an online community with optin captures, free memberships and paid memberships. I'm implementing much of your suggestions so far, with the all important outsourcing for services.
I'm transfering my knowledge and experience to reach people, converting from the very limited "live" outreach to being online. I know my stuff but the web is still a challenge.
Oh, yes, I'll be giving on-line seminars with paid memberships too. Videos are next as you are currently demonstrating (already built into my site). I'm planning to do a test online seminar too.
Thanks Eben.
Great Wealth and Happiness,
Stephen Chua.

I was impressed by the clarity of your initial presentations and what you put across. I can now see that you are an erudite educator.
Posted by: Ian McGlone | March 11, 2008 02:00 PM
Fantastic!
You know what's funny about this? In my own book (almost done!) I talk about the huge importance of studying ... and one of the examples I gave was Eben Pagan!! It was clear to me from the large number of quotes and references you have given to the great marketing / business texts of the past that you have done a lot of study.
When people are highly successful it might appear at first to be somewhat effortless or miraculous, but when you get behind the scenes you find that it's usually no accident... thanks for showing us the real stuff Eben...

Great stuff, Eben! I've always been a student of self-help, so it was natural for me to fall into this niche. I must say, though, your library puts mine to shame.
I'm looking forward to your next video post.
Posted by: Deb | March 11, 2008 02:13 PM
Once again... Thank You Eben!
You have an amazing library. In fact, I have an email signature quote that reads:
"There's a reason why most homes valued over $500,000 have libraries...
It's because income seldom exceeds personal development.
Poor people have large TV's. Wealthy people have large libraries."
-Stephen Snyder
(Stephen does a "life after bankruptcy" program.)
It looks like you exemplify that statement. It's interesting how has I grow, my personal library is growing proportionately.
Regarding your 'framework' example, it seems the sheer quantity of frameworks that one can choose from can be overwhelming, and since they're all so effective, I could see how it could be difficult to 'exclude' one opportunity for another. Certainly an opportunity to focus down on what you're creating.
Thank you again for all you do and with your integrity!
-Mike

As you listed one author/teacher after another, I was reassured that though I am new to information marketing I have been preparing for this for most of my life. One connection I had not yet made was Joseph Campbell and his "Hero with 1000 Faces." No wonder we love stories so much! Thank you also for dwarfing my book collection and making this bibliophile look positively temperate by comparison. And thank you for sharing your journey with us. It is reassuring to note that you did not spontaneously appear, fully formed, into the world. Bravo!

Great library could be time to blow out a few walls though.
Enjoyed the informative time line and discussion. I was really looking forward to a "for example in my own business 10 years ago I"....... application TEASER in your closing statement,
I think that would have really helped a lot of folks lay that first leg of the bridge between concept and application, thereby stimulating to an even greater appetite to stay on board.

Hi Eben, I have almost all of the books you mentioned but I never really thought of using their frameworks as a platform to hang my own ideas onto when creating an info product!
However, I have been indeed using this approach unconsciously already. But not to create products....instead, I've mixed my own ideas with what you teach in Double Your Dating to create great communication with women.

Hi Eben, This is the first time I am watching one of your videos. It was a really great start, and I am eagerly waiting for the next one, where you will show us how we can actually apply what you said in this video in our own lives and make real changes happen, instead of just hoping for it or dreaming about them. I really wish to get to that point where my own life is successful and amazing (in every area), so that I can finally start helping others to do the same, which I know is my purpose in life. I have created several things, and I know they are good and can be of real value to others; I just need to figure out how to take it to the "next level" so that I begin to experience real-world results, not just know that I WILL experience it someday! I believe whatever you are teaching will play an important role in that. So my sincere gratitude and deepest thanks to you.

I want to share one peace of framework it is called the Universal Law.
Many times when someone starts a project that seems impossible the Universal Law should be applied.
When people you know say you are nuts and you can not do what you are attempting remember the Universal Law.
Ok what is the Universal Law?
It is a very simple building block. If you believe you can achieve. There you have it the Universal Law.
If you ask any successful business person what really made them successful? One common answer you will hear is they never quit believing in themselves. it is Universal Law.
When you see yourself accomplishing what you perceive to be in your Universe that is Universal Law.
No matter what anyone tells you to try to discourage you from your dreams, you should remember your objective is part of your Universe not there?s. The Universal Law.
There it it is Universal Law. If you believe you can achieve.
Here is one additional building block. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

Thank you Eben, you are such an inspiration! Together with great teachers, you continue to validate all the great opportunities and knowledge I came to know.
Nearly 10 years ago, then at a young age of 25, extraordinary things (broken marriage, lost career) happened to my life which almost left me empty and frustrated. Until i decided to search for help. The books you stated by Carnegie and Hill came across to me accidentally too as i search from the shelves of my (late) grandfather and aunt. I came across on positive self-image, even M. Scott Peck's "the road less traveled" (amazingly!) during those times a good friend introduced me about landmark forum, wasn't able to attend then for i have nothing to invest, so i just attended their intro meetings to hear how their lives have been turned around.(Isn't it a remarkable coincidence?)
I have so many to thank for, firstly "my creator", my mentors, great teachers and motivators like you. I have found my passion and my dream to become a successful trainer/motivator here in my country (Philippines).
Continue to be a source of encouragement for everyone!

Eben:
I have great admiration for you, and the awesome work you're doing.
Listening to this video brought a certain thought to mind though: are there any great female minds, and influences, in the genealogy of your framework development.
I feel very strongly, that the out growing of many of our 'identity politics', 'social constructs', basically 'boxes' is imperative to the maturing of the species.
Honor the Mother, along with the Father. Heroines with Heroes. Goddesses with Gods. Its balance.

I think the best book I've ever read is "Influence" by Robert Cialdini, although it's not strictly a "self-help" book. I bought it after you mentioned it before and it really is an amazing book!

Congratulations on managing to précis nearly 100 years of personal development in 30 minutes. No mean feat.
I believe the greatest challenge of the personal development world is not disseminating the knowledge, but getting people to take action. It appears you've taken massive action with your knowledge - now if we could only discover a sure-fire way of getting people to actually do stuff, and not just read about it... we'd all be millionaires!
Oh! You are one already.

I have been writing this morning, tuned into your video and was amazed that we are on the same page, same thoughts. It inspired me to write more and put it out for others not just myself.
Thanks for all you've offered!

Hi Eben,
That was an incredible video. I just loved the library. I have a lot of books and was thinking of getting rid of many and after looking at your library I realize that my books can stay. Way cool!
March 2008 is the last month I have enough money to pay the bills attached to my name. You reminded me that I need to focus on what I want, create, and build my business mentally first. I am currently in Phase 1 and striving to finish my 1st product, and so following your video series has been tremendously helpful.
Thanks so much!

Gret Stuff Eben!
I really liked this insight and I felt a connection while you were speaking. Unlike the Altitude videos were I really could not relate my business with your information, because the informations were more targeting successful entrepreneurs who wanted to move their businesses to the next level. This time around you are starting from square 1, and this is definitely information I really can connect with and digest.
When you talked I almost forgot that the purpose of the trainings and the videos was in the end about coming out with the infoproduct. I really felt that this information was way beyond the topic and the teaching of writing sucessful infoproducts was only an aspect of the whole. This was about to unleash the human potential within us to grow in abundance and experience greatness. This is how I felt. Great stuff! I can't wait to see what's next...
Most of us who really want to be successful in IM, don't know which way to look first when they get started. This is the kind of information that can make the difference between failure and success. I really liked it!!
Thanks a lot!

Funny!
Compare these sites:
http://www.doubleyourdating.com/catalog/ vs. http://doctorpaul.net/products.htm
(I guess DoubleYourDating.com was first, right?)

Your library has so inspired me! I thought I had a lot of stuff, I am no longer embarrassed when friends come over and see everything I have bought and researched (I must stop caring what others think!). I have always wanted a library in my home and now I am going to make it happen.
Thank you for your incredible inspired work.

Wow! What an awesome summary of the history of self-help giants and the evolution of how we become more effective at healing ourselves. I have found/created some of my own frameworks in my research on change and transformation and was very glad to see that concept being shared so freely and so well in this video. You rock, Eban! Thank you!

Hey Eben,
Thanks for the shout out on the last webinar, it was really motivating! I've taken some more of your advice and implemented it.
I particularly liked your $97 one hour coaching session idea, so I put up a page on my blog:
I'm excited to see the results over the next few months. Thanks for the info and great ideas!

Just want to say thanks for the info you posted here. My business partner and I are in the middle of launching our e-book about Meeting and Dating women from social networking site like Facebook and Myspace.
You have cleared up some of the questions we had, and pointed us in a cleared direction... Just wanted to say thanks..

Hey, Eben. I've read a lot of these guys (Nightingale, Maltz, etc), but you turned me on to a few folks that i hadn't heard of. Thanks for that.
On a related note...
I'd love to see a product that takes that big ideas of these guys and puts them into an "executive summary" that is quick and easy to review. There is certainly worth in reading the entire set of material, but I feel something which would break it down to its most simplest form would be helpful to people who are too lazy or feel they are too busy to read an entire book.
If this already exists, please let me know! :)
Thanks again!!

Some great insights Eben - thank you. The Heroes journey really stuck with me. I realize that many of my clients come to me either out of fear of stepping into that journey, they need help when they are in the crisis point of the heroes journey or ironically enough, when they are on the other side of the journey and have become bored and safe.
What I now realize is that they need to find themselves the next heroes journey in their life and that while they can bring the lessons that they learned from the first journey, it can't be a repetition of the past adventure. Thanks for the aha moment!
I'm also playing with the thought of how the other archetypes of the person intertwine with their heroes journey...
Cheers,

Dear Eban,
I used to think you were just another internet crank. This video was, without a doubt, some of the most insightful and helpful material I have ever received from anyone. I can't wait for the next video. I'm living (sort of) at the bottom of the pile now. I'm hoping that, with your help, I can pull myself up to a level where I have some self respect and maybe make some money on the way there.

Hi Eban,
You covered some extremely valuable information in this video. I hope people can truely appreciate the work and study that has been put into it.
I caught on to what you were saying about Neurolinguistic Programming and or Modeling to help speed up the process to success.
This is something that I have been doing for sometime now. I am a student of Mike Dillards. I figured the fasted way to build a succesful business was to model one.
The 2 Percent Plan that I am currently working on is Mr. Rod Nichols vision of seeing his ebook in as many new network marketers hands as possible. My job is to make it happen. Help someone else before you help yourself. This is a very rewarding process.
I will be in class to learn more about frameworks, and how to build an ebook cover. Thankyou so much Eban, I really appreciate these videos and webinars. Dana

Hello Eben
At 70 years old, been there, read that, done that, but what the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can forget over the passage of time.
Thank you so very much for the video presentation and the renewal of my passions for knowledge.
You inspired me to remember all that I had once used in the pursuit of my goals. I still have all the books but your video and your presentation of the ideas of these great thinkers makes it so much easier to digest than just their printed words.
Today it's the age of video that will transform these concepts into reality for us old and new generations.
Keep it up. Look forward to more from you, please keep it coming.

How can you balanced what you are trying to become an expert at with trying to learn the business and first start setting it up?
For me I am trying to learn how to master martial art myself while also trying to build the info business. It is just so overwhelming. I have to learn about the ways to make money with the online business, buy lots and lots of info products myself and read through them to get the knowledge, then learn how to build a website, then learn HTML, then learn how to get a hosting company and domain name and autoresponder, learn how to get traffics, learn how to use PhotoShop, learn how to write and give great free content?doing all these while trying to learn the skill and become an expert in the area that I am trying to marke
